Before MySpace and Facebook, LiveJournal was the first to invent a convenient, fun network for keeping in touch with your friends. We would document our life’s events and comment on each other’s entries daily. Kids used LJ to meet new people, express themselves creatively, even market their small businesses. But in 2006, something happened. LiveJournal became dead, and posting in it was like screaming in a desert - no one will hear or care.

My sister wrote an article about her personal experience on LiveJournal - why she started it, how it came to an end, and what the future holds. I just had to share.

Every girl wants to be a Fafinette, at least once in a lifetime - the heart-cheeked, stripe-clad heroine of Fafi's drawings. I got to play dress-up and transform myself into the character with the help of a wig, some jewelry and, of course, bright makeup!

Criticism: do you really need their approval?

Last week I received not one, but two emails on the same subject: getting criticized for the way you dress.

I am an 18 year old girl who loves bright makeup and rockin' fashions. I have one problem: my mother. She hates my new look, and always finds a way to insult it. Here are a few examples: "That red lipstick makes you look like a hooker." "What is that on your face?" "You're actually wearing that outside the house? People will think you're one of those kids." "That new earring will make you look like a tramp." (I have a double lobe piercing one each ear and a single cartilage.) Or, here's a conversation we had: "So Mom, did you see the pictures I took? I think the makeup came out nice." "I don't like it. But that's why you do it, isn't it?"
I don't wear bright, crazy makeup to work, or church, just when I'm going to hang out with my friends. I try hard to ignore it, thinking that when she was my age, bright makeup and multiple piercings were usually considered... hooker-ish, that she doesn't want me attracting any unwanted attention, etc., but it's hard. I want her to approve of my self-expression, but she refuses to. What do I do?

My boyfriend and I have a bunch in common, but wardrobe-wise, what we like is completely different. He prefers a simple shirt and jeans look, which works great for him, while I like playing around with vibrant eye shadows, colored hair, and fun clothes. One day, I had on a vintage black skirt and was shattered to find out that even though I thought it looked great on me, he absolutely hated it. Though, he hadn't meant any harm by the comments he made, I was hurt by what he had said. Now I find myself always wearing the shirt and jeans look and stay with neutral make up to be safe. Not necessarily to keep him happy, but mostly because my self esteem took such a hit from his words. I love unconventional and vibrant looks, but now I am too shy to wear them around my boyfriend and people who are put off by different styles.
I love the skirts and the rest of my clothes, but I also want my boyfriend to be able to like what I'm wearing as well because he has to stand next to me after all. His opinion is important to me, but how can I enjoy myself without worrying what he is going to say and or think?

Once at a party on the rooftop of Metropolitan Museum, I spied an odd couple: a modelesque woman in a backless dress sipping champagne nonchalantly, and her male friend. Her frock and gold strappy stilettos suggested she wasn't a day over 25, but her salt-and-pepper hair and wrinkles told a different story. She must have been a retired model or a former socialite in her 60s. To add insult to injury, she was - the horror! the horror! - flirting with a much younger man.

Must-Be... Hearts!

Hearts are delicious. Those fat, rounded curves symbolize love, romance, cuteness, sex. Some people, myself included, can't get enough of hearts and collect anything heart-shaped or with hearts on it: clothing, boxes, shoes, furniture. I don't know where this heart obsession starts, but it sure has no end!

My name is Leandra, but I like to be known as Contessa Leandra because someday I am going to be a fabulously wealthy Contessa that owns Villa Falconara in Sicily and throws wonderful Masquerade parties and saves the world with humanitarian aide! (Hey, I can dream.) I'm also very interested in fashion and make-up and hairstyles. I love Victorian Era clothing, anything vintage, frilly, bright colors.

I wanted to know this: How tall are you? I ask this because I'm super short! 5ft-5'1" - somewhere in between there. And though I love fashion and dressing up and all that, models are supposed to be tall! It's hard for me to think that anyone could ever take me seriously if I always dressed up fashionably as a Contessa, because I'm just a little... midget person. Granted, Japanese girls are all very short and stylish, but I live in America, not Japan, and all my friends are at least a head taller than me. I don't exactly want to pursue a career in fashion; I love making comics and geology/volcanoes, but I do like to be dressed well. If you've done just fine for yourself in fashion and you're as short as I am, maybe I have hope after all?

Your sweetie's out of town? Say goodbye to dirty socks on the floor and hello to your newly-found ME time! When I dropped off Mark at the airport last week, I was looking forward to all this time I thought I'd have to myself. But by the time I got home, I realized we'd grown so close together that there was virtually nothing I could do that wouldn't require his involvement! You can imagine the horror.
